No, No, No...

Directions

Gather students in a circle. Leader explains that the group will pass a sentence around the circle and that each student will have a chance to change one word. The teacher begins with a simple sentence like “The dog went to sleep.” The next student amends the sentence by saying, “No, no, no! The hippo went to sleep.” The following student might amend it further by saying, “No, no, no! The hippo went to Pittsburgh,” and so on.

Reflection

Describe: What interesting stories started to emerge?

Analyze: How did you come up with the ideas?

Relate: How does this activity help us develop storytelling skills?

Possible Side-Coaching

“You only have five seconds to change one word in our sentence.”

“If you feel stuck, just say ‘pass’.”

Possible Variations/Applications

Ask students to change the tone of their responses (outraged, etc.) or to offer them as a specific character.
